Team Wellington sign Former Scottish Premier League Defender

Team Wellington are pleased to announce the signing of Northern Ireland age-group International, Rory McKeown.

The 26-year old began his youth career with Ipswich Town before he went on to join Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League in 2011. Making an early impression, McKeown scored on his professional debut against Dundee United. McKeown spent three years with the club before going on loan to Cowdenbeath.

In June 2014, McKeown joined Raith Rovers where he had an impressive campaign making 72 appearances over two seasons.

In 2016, McKeown made the move to Accrington Stanley FC where he made only one appearance before signing with Southport. The left-back scored three goals in 19 appearances before leaving Haig Avenue in the summer.

The 2017/18 season saw McKeown join Warrington Town in the Northern Premier League where he was instrumental for the side, scoring the winning goal to see his team qualify for the semi-final playoff.

Most recently, McKeown has played for Greenock Morton Football Club, one of the oldest senior Scottish clubs in the Scottish Premier League.

McKeown has represented his country at all age group levels and was called up to the full senior team in 2013. He was an unused substitute for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Portugal and Luxembourg.

McKeown is excited to have signed with Team Wellington and is looking forward to a new change.

"I’ve never been to New Zealand before so it’s very exciting to have the opportunity to experience something new, playing the game I love.

"Team Wellington are a club that have experienced success before and I’m confident I will fit in to the environment well.

“I play to win and I believe I have the ability and drive to succeed with my new team,” McKeown said.

"When I spoke to Scott, he was very clear on his vision and his playing philosophy which excites me – I can’t wait to get started.”

Team Wellington Head Coach, Hales, is confident in his new appointment and believes McKeown brings experience and maturity to his side.

"Rory is a versatile player that fits well in to my vision for the season ahead.

“Having been involved in a professional environment before, he has the right mindset and that value will be huge in our quest to achieve success this season.

“Rory gives us balance on the pitch and his attitude will be one that will only encourage his team mates around him.

“His football CV speaks for itself – he’s a fantastic addition to our squad and no doubt, will be a crowd favourite,” said Hales.

McKeown will join his new teammates in mid-September ahead of the 2019/20 ISPS Handa Premiership.
