Preparations key for defending champions Team Wellington

Team Wellington have arrived in Noumea, New Caledonia ahead of the OFC Champions League Semi Final against Hienghene Sport at Stade Numa-Daly on Sunday afternoon.

After a convincing 6-1 win over the Henderson Eels in the Quarter Final, at David Farrington Park in the Capital City, Team Wellington are ready to get back on the pitch for their next game.

Having played their last game a few weeks ago, preparations have been well structured and thought through to ensure the team are at their peak ahead of the Semi Final clash.

“The team have been preparing well and while it has been a couple of weeks since our last OFC Champions League match, it has given us the opportunity to both refresh the players mentality and physically from a long season, but also focus our attention on specific tactical concepts,” Head Coach, Jose Figueira said.

Team Wellington arrived at their home away from home on Thursday morning, giving the team time to adjust to their new environment.

“When competing in the OFC Champions League it is important to arrive a few days early and maximise your preparations,” Figueira said.

“There are many factors the team must get used to and adapt to quickly.

“After a long day of travel it has been important to get ourselves refreshed and ready to train and play.

“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get the players bodies and mind back to normal so we are ready to hit the ground running and perform.”

As well as the travel component, this year, the OFC Champions League Semi Final will be only one leg, instead of two as it has been in previous years. The change to the competition set up makes for an exciting encounter and one that the Wellington based coach has considered during his sides preparations.

“The change to the tournament does change our preparation in the sense that the game is a 90min match and not a 180min match like in previous years.

“From a mental perspective we know that in one off matches anything can happen.

“We’ve experienced this as a group before and need to just go out there and play for everything.”
