Team Wellington sign talented youngster, Marko Stamenic

Team Wellington are pleased to announce the signing of promising local midfielder, Marko Stamenic ahead of the 2019/20 ISPS Handa Premiership.

The 17-year old was part of the Western Suburbs side that claimed the 2019 Central League title, earlier this year.

Having developed through the ranks at Ole Academy, after his junior football with Stokes Valley and Lower Hutt, Stamenic was called in to the New Zealand U-17 age group side making his debut against the Solomon Islands in September of 2018.

Stamenic said the decision to sign for Team Wellington was an easy one and he’s looking forward to linking up with his new teammates as pre-season preparations commence.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to play in the National League so when the opportunity arose to play for one of the most successful clubs in the competition, it was easy for me decide.

“The opportunity to play for a club in Wellington was another huge factor and I’m looking forward to be able to play more at home this season,” Stamenic said.

Although still early on in his career, Stamenic is eager to make his mark this season and is excited for the season ahead.

“Consistency is key for me - if there is one aspect in my game that I thrive to deliver, it’s consistency.

“I’m looking forward to influencing and making an impact on both the attacking and defensive aspects of the game,” said Stamenic.

Hales is excited by the young talent and believes he has what it takes to make the step up to the National League.

“A dynamic, intelligent football player, who has that X-factor, is hard to come by but Marko has shown the potential to be a National League regular, even at such a young age,” the Head Coach said.

“He’s a humble, quiet, young man and it’s great to secure local talent and have them play in the Wellington region.

“As a club, it’s important to us to nurture youngsters like Marko both on and off the pitch and it’s fantastic to see a player of his calibre take the opportunity with two hands.”

Stamenic has joined his team mates in pre-season training and could make a starting appearance against the Wellington Phoenix on the 6th of October at Westpac Stadium.
