Team Wellington trounce Hekari to advance to OFC Champions League semis

Team Wellington comfortably advanced to the semifinals of the OFC Champions League at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday after defeating Hekari United 4-0.

The side from Papua New Guinea were no match for the winners of this year's ASB Premiership and were constantly beaten by well planned set pieces, while they also struggled to clear their line from persistent pressure.

The victory means Team Wellington finish top of Group B and will play Magenta from New Caledonia in one of the semifinals on Wednesday.

The first real chance for either side came in the 17th minute when a high ball was floated over the Hekari defence, to Wellington midfielder Mario Barcia.

Barcia stuck out a leg, but couldn't quite make contact with the ball, just a few metres from the Hekari goal.

But four minutes later Team Wellington hit the front, Jackson put in a low cross in the Hekari box and skipper Bill Robertson slotted the ball away.

Emmanuel Simon unleashed a screamer of a shot for Hekari on the half hour mark, but his effort from 25 metres out was blocked by an outstretched Robertson

It was the start of the PNG side's best, if brief, period of the game, as their midfielders were able to open up Wellington's defence with nice runs.

But that purple patch came to an end in the 37th minute when Robertson headed home a ball that Hekari weren't able to clear in front of a packed goalmouth.

Nine minutes into the second half Wellington got their third goal. It came from a corner that bounced off the legs of Pita Bolatoga and rolled into the net for an own goal.

Goal No 4 came in the 62nd minute with Luis Corrales shooting from the edge of the penalty area, the ball took a wicked deflections, giving goalkeeper Ishmael Pole no chance of making the save.

With the outcome of the game decided, the intensity dropped for the remainder of the game and while both teams had chances, there were no further goals.

Auckland City need at least a draw in their game against Amicale, from Vanuatu, on Sunday to secure their spot in the semis.

Wellington 4 (Bill Robertson 21, 37, Pita Bolatoga (own goal) 54, Luis Corrales 62), Hekari 0. HT: 2-0
