Team Wellington beat Suva FC to start Oceania Champions League on right note

Newly-crowned New Zealand champions Team Wellington have opened their Oceania Champions League campaign on a winning note, overcoming Suva FC 2-0 at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday.

Two goals in the final 20 minutes from the head of Ben Harris proved the difference for the ASB Premiership winners, after they had been unable to capitalise on their ascendancy in the first half.

Frustrated by good scrambling defence from the Fijian side, Team Wellington finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when Steven Gulley cut the ball back and Harris nodded in from close range.

Harris then sealed the result seven minutes later, connecting with a precise Leonardo Villa cross at the back post and lobbing his header over Suva goalkeeper Beniamino Mateinaqara.

The result puts Wellington second on goal difference in group B behind Papua New Guinea side Hekari United, who thumped AS Lossi of New Caledonia 5-1 earlier on Saturday.

Defending champions Auckland City FC, the other Kiwi team in the competition, play their first game at the same venue at 1pm on Sunday against the Solomon Warriors.

Team Wellington's next match is against AS Lossi on Tuesday.

The winners of the tournament qualify for the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan in December.
